AB OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of activities conducted by JHC (Japan
HIV Center), an NGO in Japan, for the establishment of a community care
system and AIDS prevention. METHODS: Various aspects of the activities
conducted by JHC for the past 5 years were evaluated with a community
psychological perspective. RESULTS: JHC's activities consist mainly of
offering direct services to PWAs, such as counselling, organizing
self-help groups and buddy services, and trying to change the social
environment of PWAs through consulting caregivers of PWAs, giving
workshops to health care professionals, lobbying and educating people by
offering hotlines and lectures. Through these activities, JHC has
activated resources in regional communities in Japan and developed a
supportive network for PWAs. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: JHC has been
promoting community care and now plays a role as a coordinator of a
supportive network for PWAs. JHC's struggle to focus on secondary and
tertiary prevention contributes to primary prevention against AIDS in
Japan as well.
